Past Events

To mark the Year of Gandhi, we have held events celebrating The Indian anti-colonial struggle, the black freedom struggle and the struggle for world peace. The year started with an event on Martin Luther King and Our Single Garment of Destiny organized by the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission on April 26. 

We then held an event called Now is The Time: Mahatma Gandhi, Indian Anti Colonial Struggle and Black Freedom Movement on June 14-15. 

We held an event called The artist as Freedom Fighter and Revolutionary: Paul Robeson, the Anti Colonial and Black Freedom Movements on July 27th organized along with Paul Robeson House. 

We had an event called A Great Leap Forward for Humanity: Freedom and the Non Aligned movement in the 21st century on September 7th. Links for the events are below.

Our celebration of the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi took place on October 3rd at City Hall, with Rev. James Lawson attending and lecturing on Gandhian non-violence. The event was titled Mahatma Gandhi and Our Single Garment of Destiny: Our Inescapable Struggle for Peace and Justice.

We then had an event on October 15th on Gandhi and the Global Color Line: Anti Imperialism Then and Now, including a study of the Chinese and Cuban revolutions.

Martin Luther King, Gandhi and Our Single Garment of Destiny

There will be a speech by Anthony Monteiro on Martin Luther King, Gandhi and our Single Garment of Destiny.

The event is organized by the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. It is free and open to the public.
